Are You a Candidate for Hair Restoration Surgery? Are You a Candidate for Hair Restoration Surgery?

Many men and women experience thinning hair or baldness as they grow older. Baldness may lead to reduced self-esteem and social withdrawal.

According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, nearly two-thirds of men will have noticeable hair loss by age 35, and that increases to 85 percent of men after the age of 50. Women also make up a large percentage of hair loss sufferers.

The answer may be to suffer and do nothing, cover some of the baldness with creative combing, buy a hairpiece, or have hair restoration in San Jose performed by an expert hair restoration surgeon.

What Are the Causes of Baldness?

Baldness is typically caused by genetic factors, hormonal changes, medical conditions, side effects of some medicines, a significant physical or emotional shock, or radiation therapy.

A qualified San Francisco men hair loss treatment surgeon can provide a lasting hair loss solution for good candidates.

What is Hair Restoration Surgery?

There are two types of hair restoration surgery: Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Both can be done by an experienced San Francisco baldness treatment surgeon.

The FUT method requires taking a strip of skin that has healthy hair follicles from where healthy hair is located, typically from the back of the head.

Then small portions of tissue containing healthy hair follicles are used for transplantation. Small holes are made in the locations to be transplanted and the hair follicle grafts are placed into the transplant sites.

This method leaves a small linear scar on the back of the head which can be covered with hair combing.  The FUE method involves taking individual hair follicles from the back of the head and inserting them into small incisions made in the transplant site.

While the FUE hair transplant method takes more time in surgery, it eliminates the small scar on the back of the head. It also reduces downtime and lowers post-procedure discomfort.

Are You a Good Candidate for Hair Restoration?

According to a qualified San Jose hair restoration surgeon, a good candidate for hair restoration surgery is one who is 25 to 65 years old, although there is no general age limit.

A patient must be in good health before surgery because a good immune system will help reduce complications and help the patient recover more quickly. The amount and type of healthy hair on the back of the head is also a critical factor.
