At our Los Gatos hair restoration clinic, it's common for patients to wonder about the causes and treatments of a receding hairline.
This article looks at both, first covering factors that can cause a hairline recession and then describing three treatment options.
If your hairline is receding, a variety of causes could play a role. One is age, the longer you live, the more likely it is you'll eventually deal with a receding hairline.
But other factors can cause hair loss as well, including:
Just as there are many potential causes of a receding hairline, there are also several treatment options. Two are based on drugs. The first is finasteride, known by the trade name of Propecia.
Finasteride helps inhibit the creation of DHT. While it does have some side effects, this drug can halt hair loss in many patients. In some, it may even reverse the effects of hair loss.
Minoxidil is the second drug, and it is more commonly known as Rogaine. It comes in both topical and orally ingested forms.
Like finasteride, minoxidil may cause side effects, but it can be effective for maintaining and regrowing hair, especially on the crown of the head. A third treatment option is the use of surgery.
For instance, at our San Jose bald treatment clinic, the procedure of choice is FUE hair restoration. During this type of surgery, hair is transplanted from an area of the head where it is plentiful to an area, like a receding hairline, that has experienced hair loss.
Performing research on your own is a great first step, but for additional advice, consider talking to an expert like Dr. John Diep, a top San Francisco hairline surgery practitioner and the lead surgeon at the MHTA Clinic.
