Hair transplant surgery has been a godsend to lots of men and women who want to replace hair lost to age, illness or health issues. Until recently, however, most surgeries resulted in unattractive scarring that was often difficult to hide. Fortunately, all that's changed, and now
hair restoration can be performed without the risk of excessive scarring thanks to a technique called FUE (follicular unit extraction). In some cases, FUE can even be used to hide an existing scar from a previous hair restoration surgery.
Transplant Scars
Scars are made of tough, fibrous tissue that's designed to be extra-strong. Unfortunately, unlike your - œnormal - skin, scar tissue does not contain follicles. That means that certain techniques like strip and plug approaches can leave scars that can be difficult to hide, even if you let your hair grow long to cover them. Plus, scars often widen over time as the skin becomes more lax, making them more and more difficult to camouflage.
FUE for Hair Restoration and Scar Management
FUE is a state-of-the-art technique aimed at restoring lost hair while minimizing scarring.
FUE hair restoration uses a small punch to remove small grafts from the donor site, resulting in very tiny scars scattered throughout the donor site. The size and placement of FUE grafts make these tiny scars - œblend in, - so they're not noticeable. The FUE technique also enables hair to be transplanted into some types of scars, so they become less visible and easier to manage. Whether or not the technique is right for you will depend on an evaluation of your hair and your scars.
