From Hair Plugs to FUE Hair Transplants

Developed for burn injuries, the restoration process involved a punch transplant technique, and it successfully encouraged hair growth in previously hairless areas of the scalp. Thanks to better science and research, the practice became smaller and more focused, with 1-3 hairs per graft and a more seamless result.

15 years later in New York, the first hair transplant was performed. While the results did yield growing hair, the hair loss treatment was not uniform enough to create a blended and natural appearance. In the 1960s, the hair plug treatment grew in popularity, but it took many sessions using this process to create a natural looking head of hair. The results of these early treatments varied widely, occasionally producing comically bad results and this diminishing the reputation and popularity of the hair restoration surgery. In the 1990s, follicular unit transplantation drastically improved the treatment process, making hairline surgery a viable option for anyone suffering from loss. Today, FUE (follicular unit extraction) transplants continue to provide natural looking and permanent results. The small transplant units grafted with magnification accurately mimic natural growth patterns, and they are fast becoming the standard procedure in hair loss treatment. The right surgeon can create such natural hair growth patterns that nobody, not even you hair stylist, will notice the difference between regular growth and transplant growth.
